Tae Kwon Do

I started taking Tae Kwon Do lessons on 5/10/05 at Ernie Reyes' West Coast Martial Arts (http://erniereyes.com) in Santa Clara. I usually go on Tuesdays and Thursdays at lunch time. You could join too and practice with me! It's probably going to take me about 4 years to get to First Degree Black Belt. I'm having a great time with it, so I can easily see myself sticking to it. I've always wanted to learn this stuff!

This page helps me remember what I'm supposed to be learning at each belt level. Besides being tested on every thing during belt testing, at the end of each test you are timed on how many pushups you can perform in 30 seconds and admonished to improve upon that with each successive test. Here are my test dates:

  • 5/9/05 on all the White Belt skills, received an Orange Belt. At the test I was able to perform 32 pushups in 30 seconds.
  • 8/9/05 on all the Orange Belt skills, received a Gold Belt. At the test I was able to perform 35 pushups in 30 seconds.
  • 10/6/05 on all the Gold Belt skills, received a Green Belt. There wasn't a pushups test this time.
  • 12/15/05 on all the Green Belt skills, received a Purple Belt. There wasn't a pushups test this time.
  • 3/11/06 on all the Purple Belt skills, received a Blue Belt. There wasn't a pushups test this time.
  • 6/22/06 on all the Blue Belt skills, received a Blue Belt 1 (a blue belt with a black stripe). This time the test was done in class, because another student and I weren't quite ready when the the test date came about a week and a half ago. I really felt ready for the test today, it seemed easy (probably thanks to the extra study time!)
  • 9/16/06 on all the Blue Belt 1 skills, received a Brown Belt. Tested with a lot of other people on a Saturday morning. It was a great day, I felt very confident with what I was testing. I barely made the testing date, having to wait for the last stripe until Thursday night because my foot position on side kicks needed improvement.

Sometimes during the day I get Tae Kwon Do Tips from the instructor or others that I want to write down.

Incidentally, this is a mixed martial arts program. I have found out that we mix in a bunch of things from other arts beside Tae Kwon Do, like: Mui Thai, Apkido, Brazilian Jujitsu (grappling), and Kick Boxing.

Brown Belt

Brown belt, unlike the previous belts, has seven stripes, not five. Halfway through (after gaining three stripes), there is a pre-test (with other students, like a regular test), to check your progress. My pre-test date is 3 months aways, and testing date is 3 months after that. So I can expect to spend 6 months as a Brown Belt it looks like.
