Web Hosting

I offer web hosting services for people who want to use mediaWiki and/or other open source software to manage their web sites.

Advantages of mediaWiki

Using mediaWiki you are able to edit and add to your sites more easily. When a team is working together to keep a site up-to-date it is easy to get a lot done. If you are a friend or family, please check out my Web Hosting For Friends page.

Current Clients

I'm interested in hosting more web sites that use mediaWiki (http://mediawiki.com/). It's the one we're using for the Bay Area Orienteering Club (http://baoc.org/) and the same that is used for the popular Wikipedia (http://wikipedia.org) site, and is a well supported piece of free software. I'm slowly aggregating a suite of clients using this wiki that I host here on my web server (several are listed on the Links page), and by using the same wiki software for all of them I am able to make the best use of my time and write improvements that work across all the wikis. However, I do have a full time job at the moment, so I can only devote a few hours each week to the effort.

My Offer

mediaWiki is easy to use and install but difficult to customize with a unique look. I'd be happy to create a free, sample account on my web server for you (100 MB of disk space), with mediaWiki and Gallery (for managing your images) installed so you can experiment and decide what you want to do. This is the same software that we use for baoc.org, but it comes pretty plain out of the box. There are a few things that are easy to change, like the logo and the color scheme, but not the layout or structure of the page. If you like the idea of using this wiki, we can talk about customizing the look and/or adding new features. I'll have to charge you $100/hour for that part, because customizing the look and function of this kind of software requires programming skills, but I'm fast at it and I'll give you a 50% discount on anything that I do for you that I can use on another one of my wikis. On the up side, I will give you a free copy of any wiki extension that I write for another of my wikis that would also be useful for you.

Web Hosting

I offer web hosting of the finished wiki on my floatingedge.com server and once you are happy with the result, I recommend you set the name servers for your domain name to point at the new wiki right were it sits. My rates are $10/month for 1 GB of disk space, or $20 month for 2.5 GB of disk space, with 2 months free if you pay for a full year at a time (ie. $100 or $200 for the year, with pro-rated rebates if you decide to move.) This is a proper web account with a control panel and everything else you typically expect from a good web host. Alternatively, I can help you move your wiki to your existing web host, if they provide the right kind of environment for PHP scripts and MySQL databases.

If the above sounds interesting to you, just let me know and I'll create a sample account for you, no obligation. Once you have an account, here's How To Login.
